Creating a Strategic Board Agenda

Preparing for board meetings can be a tedious task that involves coordinating meetings with everyone involved, communicating important details and, perhaps most important, creating a dynamic strategic agenda for your board in advance. A well-planned agenda for your board will ensure that discussions are productive and lead to effective decisions and help you reach the goals of your organization. An agenda that is not well-planned can result in a dog’s feast of multiple items crammed in together, leaving no room for generative discussions and progress on important issues.

Boards should structure their agendas in order to begin with long-term planning, and then finish with more practical topics like procedures and policies. This helps prevent the tyranny of urgent issues from consuming and distracting board members. It also keeps them focused on what is feasible within the confines of one meeting.

Idealy, you should allot the appropriate amount of time for each item on your agenda. This will stop your meeting from going over time and ensure that each subject receives the proper amount of discussion for the desired outcome.

You can also include a section titled “Nil” on your agenda for items that do not have a strategic relevance or require clarification. This will encourage other directors to raise new strategic issues. It can also help to remind board members of the reason they’re serving their company (i.e. its mission) as a way to draw their attention back to the broader agenda.
